The Wolf Parable

The Wolf Parable Here's a tale that's often shared in addiction recovery, but it applies to anyone who is changing and growing.

An old Apache was teaching his grandchildren lessons of life. He said, "A fight is going on inside of me; it is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One wolf represents fear, anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, competition, superiority, and ego.

"The other wolf stands for joy, peace, love, hope, sharing, serenity, humility, kindness, friendship, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.

"This same fight is going on inside you and inside every other person too."

The children thought about the story for a minute and then one of them asked his grandfather, "Which wolf will win?"

The old man simply replied, "The one you feed."

We can either "feed" that which creates positive energy and success or we can "feed" that which leads us to discouragement and failure.

We are naturally drawn to the food of fear, criticism, sarcasm, guilt, and despair. Like choosing healthy foods, those tasty negatives are always available and usually much more tempting than the harder fruits and vegetables of patience, generosity, peace, and faith.

ACTION STEPS:

  1. Use the wolf parable whenever you see the energy in the room or the conference call turning to negativity.

  2. Use this picture of wolves next to your phone to remind you to feed the right wolf.
